Open Studio: Traces and works from Monsoon School

27 October 2026

Throughout the monsoon season from August to October, Monsoon School #1 and #2 embarked on a journey guided by two core questions: how "sites" and "fields" can become sources of knowledge and reshape creative practices. The program wove together collective learning among artists, curators, cultural workers, activists, architects, geographers, filmmakers, and photographers from across Thailand, Southeast Asia, and China.

In Monsoon School #1: Site as Method, we questioned the meaning of "site" through conversations, project clinics, a night walk, and a hands-on workshop with Exutoire and Sher Maker Studio—crafting "tables" out of reclaimed wood and flood-stained fabric from Warorot Market to challenge fixed assumptions and propose new ways of sharing space.

Building upon this, Monsoon School #2: Field as Method expanded into field research in Chiang Khong and along the Thai-Lao border alongside Book Re:public, Mekong School, Wo-Men Work, Ajarn Warong Wonglangka, Uncle Muang Srisom, the Baan Muang Chum forest committee, and local fisherfolks on Mon Nan Fah. Together, we engaged with local ecosystems, traumatic histories, and folktales, while debating ethical responsibilities when working with communities through our "Monsooning" sessions.

Back in Chiang Mai, our encounters and learnings from both Monsoon School #1 and #2 have taken spatial form through field notes, maps, sounds, images, objects, experimental works, and the collaboratively built table structures.

Traces and works from Monsoon School #1 and #2 are now displayed and integrated at deCentral Chiang Mai, opening the site as a community space for the public from now until the end of December 2026. You are warmly invited to spend time, read, work, or exchange conversations here with us.
