Event #2 - Practicing Knowledge Otherwise
Some forms of knowledge come to be recognised and rewarded by institutions, while others remain marginal, informal, or less easily named. This gathering approaches studying as a form of practice shaped by the infrastructures and relations through which knowledge is produced and valued across contexts. Join us to re-examine such conditions through a collaborative reading group, reflecting on pedagogy and methodology while asking what counts as work and study, and how these categories are continuously negotiated.
A day of study - reading with artistic practice and their methods - with co-facilitators Maria Inarita Uthe and Rifki Akbar Pratama (KUNCI Study Forum & Collective, Indonesia), and Rosalia Namsai Engchuan (Un.thai.tled, Thailand, Germany)
Schedule
10.30: Registration
11.00: Opening session on working methodologies by KUNCI and un.thai.tled
12.30: Lunch break
13.30 - 17.00: Reading group activities
The morning session will open with Maria Inarita Uthe and Rifki Akbar Pratama (KUNCI Study Forum & Collective), and Rosalia Namsai Engchuan (Un.thai.tled) introducing their respective practices and methodologies. In the afternoon, the structure shifts toward a series of activations riffing on the reading group format: each co-facilitator will bring a text of their choice in relation to the session’s themes, to be read and discussed collectively.
Participants are encouraged to register in advance in order to receive the texts (in both English and Thai) ahead of time; copies will also be available on site for walk-ins.
Reading group activities will consider excerpts from:
“Letters: The Classroom is Burning, Let’s Dream About a School of Improper Education” - KUNCI Study Forum & Collective
“Conversación Los Abajocomunes” - Conversation between Stefano Harney, Fred Moten and Yollotl Gómez Alvarado, Juan Pablo Anaya, Luciano Concheiro, Cristina Rivera Garza and Aline Hernández
“Borderlands” - Gloria Anzaldua
“Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power” - Audre Lorde
Practice is often framed in opposition to theory; yet the study of knowledge and its production has never been separable from the forms through which it is accumulated and shared, from those most readily found within institutional frameworks — such as lectures or seminars, to performances, open studios, or simply conversations – often relegated to the register of the “informal,” and thus less recognised as sites of learning. To speak of studying, then, is already to speak of practice: a situated activity shaped by the infrastructures, relations, and regimes of value through which knowledge is recognised and rewarded.
This gathering takes studying as a form of practice in its own right, reflecting on pedagogy and methodology, as well as the often invisible labour they entail, be it reproductive, affective, or collective. In doing so, it asks what counts as work and study, and how these categories are continuously negotiated across geographical, social, institutional, and economic contexts.
